Preventing cavities is an important step to take in overall good oral health. Cavities form when the acids in your mouth eat away at the hard enamel that protects teeth. Cavities often become painful and, if left untreated, can lead to root canals or tooth loss. There are simple ways to prevent cavities.

One of the most effective ways to help prevent cavities is to thoroughly brush your teeth at least two times per day, using a toothpaste containing fluoride. Ideally, you should brush after each meal. However, as that is not always possible, it does help to drink water to help rinse the teeth clean and work against the build up of acids in the mouth.

Flossing or using an interdental cleaner everyday is another way to keep your teeth healthy. Small food particles can get stuck in-between the teeth where toothbrushes are not able to reach. This will cause a build up of acids that will erode the enamel in-between the teeth and can lead to cavities.

Eating healthy foods is another way to keep teeth cavity free. Avoid sugary foods and foods that can easily get stuck in the grooves of teeth. Sugary soft drinks, chips and candy are all foods that should be avoided. Eating lots of fruits, vegetables and unsweetened tea or water help keep teeth healthy by increasing the flow of saliva which washes away sugars, starches and other food particles that lead to acid build up.

Regular dental check-ups with professional cleanings are another way to keep teeth healthy. Your dentist will be able to look at dental x-rays and identify weak areas in your mouth that may lead to a cavity if not carefully cleaned. A dentist will also advice you on the proper tools and techniques for keeping your teeth healthy.

Preventing cavities is important in your overall oral health. It’s not too difficult to keep your teeth healthy. If you brush and floss regularly, eat foods that are healthy for your mouth and your body and visit your dentist for twice yearly cleanings, you are well on your way to preventing tooth decay.
